Los Angeles based vocal artist Juliana Snapper “uses her voice to ululate at the edge of music … fusing intense discpline and the desire to communicate through even the most compromised means." (Jennifer Coates, Art:21) Rooted in live performance, Snapper's work also incorporates composition, improvisation, installations and intermedia collaboration. Described as “exhilarating” (Art in America), “haunting...superb control” (Musical America), and “unbearably raw.” (The Drama Review), her pieces play on the fence between virtuosity and abjection, pressing the expressive envelope and specifically testing the physical limits of the embodied voice. Since 2004, she has been featured at numerous international festivals including the City of Women Festival (Llubliana, Slovenia), Ojai Music Festival (Ojai, California), Performa05 (NYC), Fierce! Festival (Birmingham, UK), Sounds French (NYC), Bodily Functions (Cork, Ireland), Istanbul Music Festival, and in series at the Armand Hammer Museum (LA), PS122 (NYC), and PS1/MoMA (NYC). Her work has been supported by grants and fellowships from The British Arts Council, The Center for Research in Computing in the Arts, the University of California Center for the Humanities, and The Durfee Foundation, among others.
